Getting There

Hatteras Island is accessible via NC-12, the scenic highway that runs the length of the Outer Banks. From the north, you'll pass through Nags Head, Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo before reaching the villages of Avon, Buxton, Frisco, and Hatteras. The drive itself is half the experience — ocean on one side and sound on the other, birds in the distance, and salt air through the windows.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore

The Cape Hatteras National Seashore protects miles of pristine beach, dunes, and marshland. It's free to access and perfect for swimming, surf fishing, shelling, and wildlife watching. The seashore spans the entire island, so you're never far from an uncrowded stretch of sand.

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

At 198 feet, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States. Soon we will be able to climb the 257 steps for a panoramic view of the island and the Atlantic. It's a must-do for any first-time visitor.

Surfing & Water Sports

Hatteras Island is world-renowned for its surf and wind conditions. The area around Buxton and the Cape Hatteras draws surfers from across the East Coast, while the sound side is a hotspot for kiteboarding and windsurfing. Several local businesses offer lessons and rentals.

Fishing

Hatteras is a serious destination for surf fishing, pier fishing, and offshore charters. The Gulf Stream runs close to shore here, making for exceptional deep-sea fishing.
